Why customers can’t find some local businesses

You can have the best fades, the best pastries, or the best brake work in town and still be invisible online. When someone searches “barber near me” or “best bakery in my city,” Google and AI assistants only recommend businesses they can clearly understand and trust.

The good news: local SEO (search engine optimization for local businesses) isn’t complicated. This checklist covers the steps that matter most for small businesses.

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in local search results. It is usually the single most important thing you can set up.

  • Choose the most accurate primary category (for example, Barber shop, Hair salon, Bakery, or Auto repair shop).
  • Add your hours, phone number, website, and service area or address.
  • Upload real photos of your work, your space, and your team.
  • List your services or menu with prices where possible.
  • Write a clear description that mentions what you do and where you’re located.
  • Complete the verification step so your listing can appear.

Step 2: Build a clear, fast website

Your website gives Google and AI tools a trustworthy source to read. It doesn’t need to be large, but it must be clear. Make sure it:

  • Says what you do and where you are on the homepage
  • Loads quickly and works well on phones
  • Has a page title and description that include your service and location
  • Lists your services, prices, hours, and contact details
  • Includes a booking or contact button
  • Embeds Google Maps so people can find you

If you don’t have a website yet, this is the step that unlocks everything else.

Step 3: Keep your name, address, and phone number consistent

Search engines compare your business information across the web. If your name or phone number is written differently on different sites, it creates doubt about which one is correct.

Pick one version of your business name, phone number, and location, then use it exactly the same everywhere: your website, Google, Facebook, Instagram, Yelp, and every directory.

Step 4: List your business in the right places

Beyond Google, add your business to:

  • Yelp
  • Bing Places
  • Apple Business Connect
  • Facebook and Instagram business pages
  • Nextdoor
  • Industry directories for your type of business

Each accurate listing gives search engines and AI tools another confirmation that your business is real and active.

Step 5: Ask for reviews and respond to them

Reviews help new customers trust you, and they signal to Google that your business is active and well regarded. Make it easy: send happy customers a direct link to your Google review page after a great visit, or put a QR code at your counter.

Reply to reviews, both good and bad, in a friendly, professional way.

Step 6: Add helpful content to your website

A short blog or FAQ section lets you answer the questions customers already ask you. For example:

  • “How much does a haircut cost?”
  • “Do you take walk-ins?”
  • “Do you make custom cakes, and how far ahead should I order?”
  • “Where can I park near your shop?”

Clear answers help customers and give search engines and AI assistants content they can quote.

How long does local SEO take?

Some improvements, like claiming your Google Business Profile, can help within days or weeks. Others, like building reviews and website authority, build up over months. Keep your information accurate and keep showing up consistently.

Quick local SEO checklist

  • Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
  • Launch a clear, mobile-friendly website
  • Use the same name, address, and phone number everywhere
  • Add listings on Yelp, Bing, Apple, and Facebook
  • Collect and answer customer reviews
  • Publish helpful FAQs or blog posts

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of helping your business appear when people search for services near them, such as “salon in my city” or “food truck near me.”

Do I need a website to show up on Google?

You can appear on Google Maps with just a Google Business Profile, but a website gives search engines and AI tools much more to work with and builds customer trust.

How do AI assistants find local businesses?

They rely on information from websites, business listings, and reviews. The clearer and more consistent your information is across the web, the easier it is for them to recommend you.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Yes. Most of the steps above are free and doable on your own. A well-built website is the one piece many owners prefer to have designed for them.
